about
"The West Gate" is a collection of acoustic-based songs that are as warm and smooth as Kentucky bourbon. With gentle waves of acoustic guitar cascading over pedal steel rhythms, Doug's voice is at once soft and beguiling. Stripped down and gentle, the album feels like a conversation with an old friend in the back booth of a honky tonk at closing time.

Track Name: Big River
Words and Music by Doug Pettibone

Days fly by in the wink of an eye
Nights are longer since you told me good bye
Down for the count
Still realin from the blow
Seein stars
Yeah I`im out cold

Hold your cards close to your chest
Give em a little
But your savin the best
The things you said
Still stuck inside my head
And your cool skin lying in my bed

I wanna jump in the water
Let the big river take me
Wrap me in your arms
Please don`t forsake me

I see the curve of your body in the hills of the earth
Feel the beating of your heart
Beating strong like the surf
Am I lyin to myself
Well I hope it aint true
If wishes were fishes
I`d throw a line out to you

I wanna jump in the water
Let the big river take me
Wrap me in your arms
Please don`t forsake me

Thinkin things thru
But it just aint clear
Whiskey sure was warm on the trail of tears
What`s clear to me
Is the things that you do
Will always come creepin back on you

I wanna jump in the water
Let the big river take me
Wrap me in your arms
Please don`t forsake me

I wanna jump in the water
Let the big river take me
Wrap me in your arms
Please don`t forsake me
Track Name: The West Gate
The West Gate

I whiskey up my dixie cup
And I hit my cigarette
Packin up my suitcase
But I`m feelin no regret
This rollin stone that I`ve become
Has kept me from my home
One more night and one more song in this bed I`ll sleep alone

Green Hills of old oak trees
White caps from an off shore breeze
Blue water from ancient sea can heal me
And set me free

There`s voices in these canyons
On a sprit wind they travel
The hills have eyes and they`re watching me
As I walk thru dirt and gravel
I step into the water
To surf this sacred place
The tide is high and so am I
I`m in a better place

Green Hills of old oak trees
White caps from an off shore breeze
Blue water from ancient sea can heal me
And set me free

The colors change and the night begins
The sky's a bed of stars
The heat of the fire light
Pulls songs from my guitar
There really is no other place
That I have ever seen
I close my eyes and I can have this reoccurring dream

Green Hills of old oak trees
White caps from an off shore breeze
Blue water from ancient sea can heal me
And set me free
Track Name: Two Of Us
Words and music by Lennon and McCartney
Photo Dan Dion

Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone's
Hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving
Not arriving
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters
On my wall
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low
In the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo
In the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
Track Name: North Carolina
North Carolina

North Carolina
Why did you treat me this way
You know I wanted to stay in your town

North Carolina
With your flowers and song
Your eyes are tearin and there`s somthin wrong

In the way that the shadows fall
Like signs written on the wall
To me tonight

North Carolina
Give me something to hold
The storm wind blowin and it`s cold in your town

North Carolina
Your smile could light up my day
But now your smile's gone away for a while

In the way that the shadows fall
Like signs written on the wall
To me tonight
Track Name: Into The Mystic
Words and music by Van Morrison

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I dont have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when thst fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I dont have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Track Name: Jolene
Flowers on the window
And flowers on the hills
You put your lips upon my neck and givin me the chills
Well it seems like things are sleepy in this town
Street are empty
There`s no one else around

Jolene, Jolene
Finest woman I have ever seen
Jolene, Jolene
Why`d you have to go and be so mean

If I`d gave myself a nickel for every time I`d cryed
I`ll fill up the ocean with all the tears I`d cry
Time is movin slow and so am I
Grey clouds in the distance start to cry

Jolene, Jolene
Finest woman I have ever seen
Jolene, Jolene
Why`d you have to go and be so mean

Every time you roll the dice you can win or lose
But maybe if your lucky you might have a chance to chose
Seems like I just flew into your web
The path you walk the flowers are lyin dead

Jolene, Jolene
Finest woman I have ever seen
Jolene, Jolene
Why`d you have to go and be so mean
Track Name: Honey Biscuit
Song bird singin outside my window
It sang all night and the night before
The lights of the city look like a golden river
I like takin your stuff and you`re such a good giver

I`m keepin your stuff this time
Wrapped up neatly hidden deeply in my mind

I saved your message on my telephone
Just to hear your voice cause it feels like home
Your sweet southern words so smooth and so fine
What`s mine is yours
And what yours is mine

I`m keepin your stuff this time
Wrapped of neatly hidden deeply in my mind

You`re my little honey biscuit all buttered and brown
Juke joint baby really throwin it down
You got good gravy and your cookin`s good too
Hot peppered jelly`s comin home to you

I`m keepin your stuff this time
Wrapped of neatly hidden deeply in my mind
I`m keepin your stuff this time
Wrapped of neatly hidden deeply in my mind
In my mind
Track Name: Little Man
Sittin on top of the world yesterday
Thinkin bout things in no particular way
He called this morning
He said "happy birthday,
I got something for you
But you're too far away"

A broken down marriage
And a broken down car
Sweet country music
From a old steel guitar

I wish you were here with me
Holding my hand
You're my flesh and blood
You're my little man

Livin like a gypsy out on the road
The newspaper man said my soul has been sold
I called you from Kansas but I couldn't get thru
The Wichita lineman is singin the blues

A broken down marriage
And a broken down car
Sweet country music
From an old steel guitar

I wish you were here with me
Holding my hand
You're my flesh and blood
You're my little man

So far away
Planes go and trains fly
So far away
Watching you waving goodbye
So far away

The world is spinning and I can barley hang on
The great white northern nights are painfully long
Fresh snow and pine
And a bullet holed sign
I'm dropping in latitude
I'll be home in no time

A broken down marriage
And a broken down car
Sweet country music
From a old steel guitar

I wish you were here with me
Holding my hand
You're my flesh and blood
You're my little man
Track Name: Original Originator
Why must I wake up and sleep off all my day
Well I guess I just missed a big party
One glass of wine should provide a good time
But I went and I finished the whole bottle

Well I might not be the original originator
Of somethin I aint thought of
That I think that I thought at the time

Well I'm smooth talkin, slow walkin, sweet potato see ya later
And honey I sure love you
But my phone was not working at the time

Well I spent some time down at the old four corners
With the tv screamin bout the T storm warnins
Shackin up in the old slave quarters with a honey bee

Big ol roots of the trees are showin
And it's high noon here and the sun is glowin
This Delta heat is sure kickin my ass
It's kickin my ass

Well I guess I'll keep tryin till I get it right
But I think that I misplaced the instructions
Oh what the hell
Let's go down to the bar room
And we'll help out my friend with his problem

Well I might not be the original originator
Of somethin I aint thought of
That I think that I thought at the time

Well I'm smooth talkin, slow walkin, sweet potato see ya later
And honey I sure love you
But my phone was not working at the time
But my phone was not working at the time
Track Name: She Belongs to Me
Words and music by Bob Dylan

She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black.

You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees.

She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She's nobody's child,
The Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She's a hypnotist collector,
You are a walking antique.

Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
For Halloween give her a trumpet
And for Christmas, buy her a drum
